A team driven
by passion

At Manulalu, hospitality is more than a profession — it is a genuine passion shared by the entire team. Every detail of the guest experience is shaped by people who deeply care about this place, its culture, and the stories it holds. From welcoming guests to sharing local traditions, the team is united by a common purpose: creating meaningful and authentic experiences.

Joseph, the vision behind Manulalu

Joseph, the founder of Manulalu, was born in Ngada and belongs to the Lokalodo tribe. Growing up surrounded by the mountains, villages, and traditions of this region, he developed a deep connection to the land and the culture that shaped him.

In his early twenties, curiosity carried him far beyond Flores. Working on a cruise ship, Joseph traveled the world, from the Caribbean to the United States, discovering new cultures while gaining valuable experience in hospitality along the way. But no matter how far he traveled, home was never far from his mind.

After years abroad, Joseph returned to Ngada with a clear vision: to share the beauty of the place where he was born and to welcome travelers from around the world into the rich culture, traditions and spirit of his homeland: Manulalu was born.

Karl, a journey that became a story

At first glance, nothing seemed destined to bring Joseph and Karl together, except perhaps a shared love for adventure and the call of the unknown.

In 2012, Karl traveled to Indonesia on what he thought would be just another trip. Curious by nature, he chose to explore Flores at a time when only a handful of travelers ventured there. That’s when he met Joseph. With few ATMs on the island back then, Joseph helped him navigate the practical side of traveling Flores, but more importantly, he introduced him to the land, the people, and the spirit of his home.

Between stories, adventures, and a shared vision for something bigger, Karl eventually decided to join the Manulalu project. Today, he’s not just part of the team, he’s part of the family

Many come from nearby traditional villages, bringing with them stories, traditions, and a deep connection to the region. With genuine smiles and heartfelt hospitality, they are always ready to share a glimpse of their culture and make every guest feel at home.
